The Slender Man myth had lurched horribly into reality, and a moral panic, similar in tone to previous uprisings about Marilyn Manson or Ozzy Osbourne, shrieked its way across national media. Slender Man was the dark force incarnate, the Thing that arrives unbidden and unseen from the outside world to march our children away — the cult leader, the stranger with candy.
As far as millions of Americans were concerned, this was the beginning, middle, and end of the Slender Man story. The movie does not tell the story of the crimes committed by Anissa and Morgan; in the trailer, however, young girls are motivated to do horrible things by their connection to Slender Man. Another, hollow-eyed, covered in blood, wanders numbly out of a forest, greeted by swirling cop cars. The camera pans down to her hands before fading to black: It is heavily implied she is carrying a knife.
You could imagine how someone, somewhere, might recoil. The petition was started on a progressive social advocacy platform called Care2 by a woman named Alison Perris. They also believed he had threatened them and their families and could read their minds. Children have always had fanciful flights of imagination.
These claims sound much like the Salem witch hunts of the s when young girls accused each other of riding with the devil. The resulting panics led to countless false confessions and over 20 executions. The same could probably happen here. The teen, who had a history of mental illness, was obsessed with the character. The lack of detail in this and the previous case points more towards mental illness than anything else.
Slenderman, then, became the a focus for a mania that forced these girls to act out violently. Thus far, no more reports of Slenderman-related violence have surfaced.
The creators and maintainers of the mythos are adamant about their disapproval. I attempted to contact him for this story, to no avail. He is a new villain, a new scapegoat, and a new demon. Thankfully, no one has yet been killed in his honor. The year-old Wisconsin victim is recovering and doing well.

Later, a character modeled after Slender Man is incorporated into a version of Minecraft. He is becoming a recognizable trope. However, he is most notoriously known to stalk victims to the edge of madness and kidnap children, who are never seen again.
