It is also quoted or alluded to almost times in the New Testament. Jesus used verses from Deuteronomy to dismiss the temptations of Satan see Deuteronomy , 16 ; ; Matthew —11 and to explain which commandment was greatest in the law see Deuteronomy ; Matthew — Deuteronomy 5—11 Moses exhorts the Israelites to teach their children to love the Lord, keep the commandments, and marry in the covenant.
He reminds them that they are to be a holy and chosen people of the Lord. Moses also tells the Israelites of the lessons they need to remember from their wanderings in the wilderness and warns them of what will happen if they forget.
He recounts times when the Israelites rebelled and how he mediated between them and the Lord. He teaches the Israelites that if they love and serve the Lord, they will be blessed in the promised land; if they do not, they will be cursed. Deuteronomy 12—17 Moses instructs the people to destroy the false gods of the Canaanites and to remain a separate people, free from worldly practices and influences.
He warns Israel against having kings but then provides instructions for them in case they decide to have a king despite his counsel. Deuteronomy 18 Moses instructs Israel to avoid the superstitions and occult practices of other nations. The conquest of Transjordan had been successfully concluded, and Moses challenged the people in these farewell addresses. The opening address Deut. Deuteronomy does not speak of how Moses confronted Pharaoh and how the miracles of the ten plagues forced Pharaoh to let the people go, but it alludes to the Exodus repeatedly five times in the first address: Deut.
Then he details their defeat both spiritually and militarily at Kadesh-barnea. There are references here to events recorded in Numbers, but like the record in Numbers, almost nothing is said about events of the forty years of wilderness wandering. The journey around Edom toward Transjordan is mentioned, and the defeat of the kings Sihon and Og is recorded in fuller detail than in Numbers. Then comes the allocation of land in Transjordan for the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh as in Num.
Moses concludes the address with exhortations to be loyal to the Lord. The second address Deut. Some consider this address as continuing to Deut. The speech begins with the Ten Commandments, almost exactly like the wording in Ex.
The terror of the theophany a visible self-revelation of God is recalled with the call to obedience. Only the Ten Commandments are given directly by the voice of God; the rest of the law is mediated through Moses. The following chapters are sprinkled with examples of God's care and judgments since leaving Egypt—all allusions to material in Exodus and Numbers.
These examples serve to warn Israel to trust the Lord and not themselves. This leads to a promise of success in the coming wars of Canaan. The laws Deut. Most of these have some parallel to material found in the previous books of the Pentateuch, which will be noted at the appropriate places.
The third address Deut. It includes the solemn ceremony to be held in the valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, near Shechem, after Israel had secured a foothold in Canaan—a ceremony reminiscent of the covenant ceremony of Ex. These laws and exhortations were given by Moses with emphasis on Israel's obligation before God to hear and obey the law of the Lord.
The final sections of the book are equally important and powerful — They include the installation of Joshua as Moses' successor, the great Song of Moses celebrating the greatness of God and His care for His covenant people Deut. Through types and prophecy this book also points us to Christ. He is the Passover Lamb and the coming Prophet.
Moses, the founder of Israel's theocracy, mediated the old covenant, but Jesus Christ, the Son of God, mediated the new covenant Jer. The substance of the covenants is the same, but their manner of administration differs significantly. Whereas the old covenant was written on tablets of stone, Christ writes the new covenant through the Spirit of the living God on the tablets of human hearts 2 Cor. The old covenant was ratified with Israel's promise, "we will hear and do" Deut.
But the new covenant depends on God's better promise, "I will write it on their hearts" Jer. The old covenant called for shedding the blood of animals; the everlasting new covenant was instituted once and for all by the blood of Christ Jer. But more than the act itself, Jesus carefully explained the heart of this commandment. It prohibits us from looking at a woman to lust for her , where we commit adultery in our heart or mind, yet may not have the courage or opportunity to do the act Matthew Not steal : This command is another important foundation for human society, establishing the right to personal property.
God has clearly entrusted certain possessions to certain individuals, and other people or states are not permitted to take that property without due process of law. Not steal : We can also steal from God. Of course, this demands we honor God with our financial resources, so we are not guilty of robbing Him Malachi Not steal : Ephesians gives the solution to stealing.
Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. That is the worst form of injury a person can do to another. Compared to one who does this, a gangster is a gentleman, and a murderer is kind, because he ends life in a moment with a stroke and with little pain. But the man guilty of slander ruins a reputation which may never be regained, and causes lifelong suffering.
Many, many times I have known what it is to suffer with that. To repeat a story which brings discredit and dishonor to another person without making sure of the facts, is breaking this commandment… How many people, especially Christian people, revel in this, and delight in working havoc by telling tales about others.
To excuse the action by saying they believed the report to be true, or that there was no intention to malign, is no justification. What about inappropriate silence? You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor : The New Testament puts it simply. Satan is always there to encourage a lie John ; Acts ; and Jesus Himself was the victim of false witness Mark ; in some ways, we might say this was the sin that sent Jesus to the cross. You shall not covet : All the first nine commands focus more on things we do; the tenth deals straight with the heart and its desires.
Just because you have not taken the final step does not mean you are not in the process of coveting right now. Hebrews puts it well: Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have.
This last commandment is closely connected with the first commandment against idolatry: For this you know, that no… covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God Ephesians And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. So it was, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.
We have seen this day that God speaks with man; yet he still lives. Now therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore, then we shall die. For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
In the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice : The whole scene was indeed awesome: T he LORD spoke ; there was fire , a cloud , thick darkness , a loud voice ; and it all made such an impression on Israel that they asked Moses to not have God speak to them so directly any more.
Why should we die… if we hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore, then we shall die makes it plain. The Mount Sinai experience was not one of sweet fellowship with God. Tell us all that the LORD our God says to you, and we will hear and do it : Israel was far too confident in their ability to keep the law of God. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!
You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess. Their response was evidence that they took Him seriously.
In fact, Israel did not keep this heart; not 40 days later they danced in worship around a golden calf. Every command of God is rooted in love for us, not some obsessive desire for control, or mean-spirited attitude towards us. Therefore you shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you : Knowing the glory of God as revealed at Mount Sinai and the love of God as revealed by His longing that it might be well with them , gave them all the more reason to obey God.
When we have trouble obeying God, we are clearly lacking in one or both of these areas. Either we forget His glory, or we forget His love for us, or we forget both of them.
