I don't want you to pose. You are making faces like you are hurt. We will shut down. You go away and come back when you hurt for real,'" recalls Smith. They can see right through me and all of the 'Will-isms' that I know how to do to make the audience laugh or smile or cry Michael Mann directed Smith to critical acclaim in the drama Ali.
As much as the director demanded, Smith says he also found himself struggling to meet the expectations of his co-star: his own nine-year-old son, Jaden Christopher Smith, who plays his character's son, Chris Jr. Will Smith says the experience changed him as an actor; and as a bonus, he says playing out the events of what Chris Gardner called 'the worst year of his life' gave Smith and his son a stronger foundation in their relationship.
You have to be there. Christopher was willing to go to great lengths to find places to sleep. This is accurately depicted in the The Pursuit of Happyness. They only slept on the floor for a couple of nights, but made the most of the BART for shelter. They would also sleep on the BART trains. To prepare for the film, Chris took Will Smith to see the actual bathroom in which he slept with Chris Jr. Gardner told Smith that it made him uncomfortable to be in there for too long, but Smith decided to take in the scene after Chris left the restroom.
Money was tight for Chris, so he had to get creative in how he earned a buck here and there. On several occasions, he gave blood for cash.
It did not get him much, but it was better than nothing. Chris never felt good about giving blood for money because it allowed him to see desperation at a whole new level — not only from others that he considered below him but from himself as well. As he was attempting to scrape together money, Christopher learned of a scam to earn some bills.
One day, Gardner saw a man fighting with a vending machine for cigarettes in a hotel. When the man went to the front desk and asked for a refund, they obliged. Over the next two weeks, Chris adopted this into a ploy of his own. Like the film, Chris did frequent the Glide Memorial Church for shelter.
One thing the movie did not detail is that the church only took in homeless mothers with kids. Reverend Williams played himself in the film too. Chris felt indebted to Reverend Williams and vowed to pay him back for sheltering them. Chris truly cherished the help that Reverend Williams gave to him. Not only did he appreciate him offering shelter, but Chris was moved by his words too.
Chris was a natural during his training program and was one of the best performers in the program. Early into the program, he passed his Series 7 Exam which allowed him to become a full employee at the company. Bear Stearns was impressed with his work and tried to recruit him. In the end, he was hired by Dean Witter thanks to his sensational work ethic. He made around calls, coming in early and staying late each day.
The Pursuit of Happyness made it seem as if only one person from the training program could be hired by the company.
In fact, Dean Witter welcomed any of their trainees to join the company so long as they passed the licensing exam.
It was a good start to his stockbroker life. In , Gardner published an autobiography detailing his struggle and rise titled The Pursuit of Happyness. One part that is left out is that he has another child. After the events of the film, Christopher and Jackie began speaking again. She quickly became pregnant with their second child. Storyline Edit. Based on a true story about a man named Christopher Gardner. Gardner has invested heavily in a device known as a "bone density scanner". He feels like he has it made selling these devices. However, they do not sell well as they are marginally better than x-ray at a much higher price. As Gardner works to make ends meet, his wife leaves him and he loses his apartment.
Forced to live out in the streets with his son, Gardner continues to sell bone density scanners while concurrently taking on an unpaid internship as a stockbroker, with slim chances for advancement to a paid position.
Before he can receive pay, he needs to outshine the competition through 6 months of training, and to sell his devices to stay afloat. Inspired by a true story. Rated PG for some language. Did you know Edit. Goofs In one scene, the train doors close on Chris Gardner's hand while he is holding a bone scanner. He doesn't let go, and the train departs with the doors partially open.
That would never happen in real life; BART trains are designed not to move if the doors of any car are obstructed. Quotes Christopher Gardner : [after playing basket ball] Hey. User reviews Review. Top review. Meaningful and Uplifting. He has invested all his money on portable bone density scanners, which he personally sells to physicians. Despite being a better product than x-rays machines, they are also far more expensive, meaning that they are an unnecessary luxury for most physicians.
He needs to sell three scanners per month just to meet the basic necessities to support his family, his wife, Linda, and their five year old son, Christopher, on who he dotes since he didn't know his own father when he was a child. But lately, that has been three per month more than he has sold, resulting in an increasing embittered Linda continually needing to work double shifts doing manual work at a laundry, which still isn't enough to cover those basic costs, they being currently behind three months rent.
Chris can't afford to pay his parking ticket, meaning that he has to take the bus everywhere now as the clamp remains on the tire of his car. Feeling like the scanner is not the answer to their financial problems, Chris, with or without Linda's blessing, decides to take a chance by switching careers when he sees that brokerage and securities firm Dean Witter has a six month internship program, which only admits twenty applicants, leading to only one intern being hired at the end of the process.
It isn't until he is well immersed into the process that he learns that the internships are non-paying. Based largely on his chutzpah, Chris, against the odds, gets one of the twenty positions.
With some changes in their lives resulting in fewer expenses, Chris figures he needs to sell his remaining six scanners just to scrape by for those six months.
